Mild-Mannered – Video Project (Assignment 3)

 

What is the video about?

The theme I chose for this assignment is a How-to (demonstration) with hints of methods used in Close-up (detail) in the context of embroidery.

 

What is the concept?

I wanted to use embroidery as a form of protest for the events happening in the United States with ICE and the poor handling of the entire administration.

In a previous course I had the chance to learn about women using embroidery and other fiber arts in activism to enhance their voices toward various issues. Textiles can give a voice to individuals who may be silenced or confronted because it’s something certain people of higher social status don’t want to hear.

I hoped to subvert the expectations of my audience by showing the quiet, and unassuming nature of embroidery (with interrupting the peace using the audio) then suddenly transitioning to a harsh environment where the full piece is shown displaying the words “Fuck Ice” in a font that’s usually found in this type of art.

 

The methods I used:

This video was made over a few days plus the time between where I finished up the piece and edited the audio.

I wanted to take a slow and steady approach instead of a fast-paced scene that focuses on maintaining an environment where I’m reflecting on the audio. I created a calm feeling that gets interrupted by the news and quotes which is becoming more and more common recently.

The phrase I used is very common in these protests and in protest sign art.

Assignment 1 - Project 1 (The Poor Image)

For this assignment I would like to use an image of my face with a black and white filter layered over top of it then place it on a newspaper wherever the original image is.  The goal for this project is to physically capture the possible path of misinformation in media while using a medium that is slowly becoming less and less relevant as time moves forward. My plan is to use the circulation aspect of this assignment to “degrade” the image to the point of not being able to recognize the message underneath. This would include taking a photo of the newspaper spread and emailing this to myself and others (after every addition) to either be printed out or drawn on digitally. And then the image could be distorted after the fact.

  Before vs. After Here’s my completed assignment! - Written reflection - For this assignment, I wanted to display the physical path of misinformation using a medium that’s becoming less and less common nowadays. I have decided to use a newspaper as my medium and have that circulated between my family members and myself. They could add things that related to the news story or the story I fabricated, changing its meaning entirely. This could mean “censoring” random names or adding the source picture of my face to every photo no matter what it’s about. I hoped to make this as ridiculous as some misinformation can be and display just how fast the meaning can be changed if you twisted the right words. Because a wild lie/misinterpretation is a better story than the honest truth.
