Mild-Mannered - Time-Based Art (Project 3)
Mild-Mannered – Video Project (Assignment 3)
What is the video about?
The theme I chose for this assignment is a How-to
(demonstration) with hints of methods used in Close-up (detail) in the context
of embroidery.
What is the concept?
I wanted to use embroidery as a form of protest for the
events happening in the United States with ICE and the poor handling of the
entire administration.
In a previous course I had the chance to learn about
women using embroidery and other fiber arts in activism to enhance their voices
toward various issues. Textiles can give a voice to individuals who may be
silenced or confronted because it’s something certain people of higher social
status don’t want to hear.
I hoped to subvert the expectations of my audience by
showing the quiet, and unassuming nature of embroidery (with interrupting the peace
using the audio) then suddenly transitioning to a harsh environment where the
full piece is shown displaying the words “Fuck Ice” in a font that’s usually
found in this type of art.
The methods I used:
This video was made over a few days plus the time
between where I finished up the piece and edited the audio.
I wanted to take a slow and steady approach instead of
a fast-paced scene that focuses on maintaining an environment where I’m
reflecting on the audio. I created a calm feeling that gets interrupted by the
news and quotes which is becoming more and more common recently.
The phrase I used is very common in these protests and in protest sign art.
Here
is some of my inspiration along with the impact textiles have had on various movements
regarding issues of feminism, politics, and climate change (4th link
is the audio):
