Assignment 4 - Conceptual Reflection (Book 2)

PULSE (Book 2) Process, methods, and intentions: Record relevant technical details (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lighting conditions)  While taking pictures for this book I didn't mess with the camera settings too much. I had the camera on both auto and manual focus at some point during this shoot. A lot of the photos were taken in the dark though. Image editing decisions (contrast, tonality, colour, sharpness, effects, physical manipulation)  Colour was a major part of this book. I wanted to use this to symbolize blood and the colours found on an echocardiogram. Red, a little purple, and blue. The only photo that I physically manipulated is the title page. Another thing that I chose to do is duplicate every third photo in my sequence to represent my unique  heartbeat. The title "PULSE" could have various meanings when taking colour into consideration, it could mean your actual pulse, lights at a party, or even just a general energy. Layout (image order, structure,...

Assignment 4 - Conceptual Reflection (Book 1)

IDENTITY (Book 1) Process, methods, and intentions: Relevant technical details (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lighting conditions)  For this portion of the project I decided to keep the same ID picture throughout to maintain a sort of continuity and focus on the main subject. This was meant to take control of the cold, institutional photo, to show that there's an actual person behind the calculated picture required by the university for the card. The base photo is under the same lighting and utilizes it's already pixelated appearance. Image editing decisions (contrast, tonality, colour, sharpness, effects, physical manipulation)  Instead of changing the photos (aside from a few photos) in photoshop, I chose to physically alter these to display energy and personality, sort of like my first project completed during this course. Like graffiti! I wanted to alter these pictures to enforce the idea of denied identity even if my changes are completely "out there" in terms o...

Assignment 4 - Photobook Inspiration

For this assignment (book 2)  I have taken inspiration from medical textbooks as opposed to typical photobooks/artbooks and drawn on my own experience with cardiac issues. I have an Atrioventricular septal defect along with a leaking Mitral valve. A lot of my art up until this point has had at least something to do with the heart and it's something I'm sure that I'll continue to do during my art career no matter the medium. I wanted to treat the book like a heart monitor so it would be set up horizontally instead vertically, and all of my images will be either red or blue (or a mix of both) to represent oxygen rich and oxygen poor blood. I'm hoping to have these images laid over a black background.  The medical/anatomy textbooks will be used as inspiration for formatting the photos in the book.  - Labels  - Definitions - Stories behind each image
