  Before vs. After Here’s my completed assignment! - Written reflection - For this assignment, I wanted to display the physical path of misinformation using a medium that’s becoming less and less common nowadays. I have decided to use a newspaper as my medium and have that circulated between my family members and myself. They could add things that related to the news story or the story I fabricated, changing its meaning entirely. This could mean “censoring” random names or adding the source picture of my face to every photo no matter what it’s about. I hoped to make this as ridiculous as some misinformation can be and display just how fast the meaning can be changed if you twisted the right words. Because a wild lie/misinterpretation is a better story than the honest truth.   This is the beginning of my project! First step is to change the topic of this newspaper.  Next step is to have this circulate!

 Suzy Lake  Who - Suzy Lake is an American-Canadian artist who is now based in Toronto.  What - She is a photographer, performance/visual artist, and video maker who works to address issues of identity beauty standards, and age. Where - She was originally from Detroit then moved to Montreal, and later settles in Toronto. When - Suzy started her art practice in 1968 and is still active today. Why - Suzy is a feminist artist who works to give a voice to the politics of the body, gender, and identity. Work that pertains to this assignment could be “A Genuine Simulation Of …#2” where Suzy displays 6 gelatine silver prints, each shown in various stages of putting on makeup. She disrupts the pictures by putting on a literal face of makeup which also affects the meaning. This is who she is vs how society wants women to look. The disruption causes the photos to become eerily flat and unrecognizable which is extremely interesting!

For this assignment I would like to use an image of my face with a black and white filter layered over top of it then place it on a newspaper wherever the original image is.  The goal for this project is to physically capture the possible path of misinformation in media while using a medium that is slowly becoming less and less relevant as time moves forward. My plan is to use the circulation aspect of this assignment to “degrade” the image to the point of not being able to recognize the message underneath. This would include taking a photo of the newspaper spread and emailing this to myself and others (after every addition) to either be printed out or drawn on digitally. And then the image could be distorted after the fact.
